Malia Obama, the daughter of Michelle and Barack Obama, changed her name at the start of her acting career to put some space between herself and the former president and first lady.
This big shift occurs as the 25-year-old prepares for her big Hollywood film debut. Before her short film, The Heart, had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, the aspiring director changed her stage name.
What has Malia Obama renamed herself?
The Harvard graduate dropped the Obama last name back in January. The daughter of the former president of the United States was called Malia Ann as referred in the artiest spotlight video in the meet of Sundance Institute.
The Heart, a short film by Malia, centers on the deep and complex bond between a mother and her kid. Tunde Adebimpe, John Weigand, and LaTonya Borsay are in the main cast of the movie.
A man lamenting the death of his mother after she gives him an unusual request in her will is the subject of this strange little story, akin to a fable, as Malia expressed it in her spotlight video.
Malia Obama and Hollywood
Malia worked as an intern at Harvey Weinstein’s production firm and on the HBO drama series Girls before making her Hollywood debut. Malia has also contributed as a staff writer on Swarm, an Amazon Prime series starring Donald Glover.
Glover told Vanity Fair, “She’s just, like, an amazingly talented person,” in reference to her work ethic and tenacity. She is working incredibly hard and is really focused. She seems like someone who will soon experience some pretty wonderful things. Glover continued, “Her writing style is fantastic.
She co-wrote the fifth episode with Janine Nabers, the creator of the show, who was quite complimentary about her work. “She made some really amazing and entertaining pitches, some of which were outrageously funny. She is a very talented writer. She made a significant contribution. She is incredibly committed to her work,” said Nabers.
