In a congratulatory message to Doval, who was recently reappointed as India’s National Security Adviser and Special Representative on the Indo-China border issue, Wang emphasized the global significance of China-India relations. He underscored the importance of maintaining peace and stability in the border areas and reaffirmed his commitment to implementing the agreements previously reached between the two countries.
China and India Foreign Ministers Meet at SCO Summit Amid Ongoing Tensions
Wang Yi’s message followed a meeting with Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Astana, Kazakhstan. This summit marked the first high-level interaction between the two nations since Narendra Modi began his third term as India’s Prime Minister.
The border dispute, which has been a longstanding issue, escalated in 2020 following clashes between Chinese and Indian troops in the Galwan Valley of eastern Ladakh. This confrontation led to increased military deployments on both sides of the border, further straining relations.
In response to these tensions, China and India established a special mechanism aimed at resolving the border dispute, co-chaired by Ajit Doval and the Chinese Foreign Minister. Despite holding 19 meetings so far, this mechanism has yet to achieve a resolution.
Wang Yi’s recent statements signal a continued effort towards dialogue and cooperation, with hopes of fostering a more stable and harmonious border region in the future.
