Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Moscow was part of the 22nd India-Russia Summit. His discussions with President Putin, which occurred amid the ongoing Ukraine conflict, were closely watched by Western nations. Modi emphasized the importance of peace, stating, “A solution to the Ukraine conflict is not possible on the battlefield. Peace efforts amidst bombs and guns do not succeed.”
Tensions with the US
The US State Department had previously expressed unease over India’s deepening relationship with Russia. Following Modi’s visit, the Pentagon also issued a statement addressing the matter. The growing friendship between New Delhi and Moscow is seen as a challenge to the Indo-US strategic partnership, prompting a critical response from American officials.
Despite these concerns, President Joe Biden has reiterated that India remains a vital strategic partner for the United States. “Despite concerns about relations with Russia, India will continue to be a strategic partner for Washington,” Biden stated.
US Reactions
In Washington, Pentagon Press Secretary Major General Pat Ryder acknowledged the long-standing relationship between India and Russia, reaffirming India’s role as a strategic partner. “Despite India’s strong ties with Russia, we will continue to have a full and frank dialogue with India,” Ryder told reporters.
Meanwhile, US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller reiterated America’s concerns. “We have been very clear about our concerns regarding India’s relationship with Russia,” Miller said in a press conference. “It is crucial for all countries, including India, to support efforts
White House Press Secretary Karin Jean-Pierre echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the importance of India’s influence over Russia. “India’s long-term relationship with Russia gives it the ability to urge President Putin to end his brutal, unprovoked war in Ukraine,” Jean-Pierre stated.
